Eleanor, a judge for a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., is visiting her father, Isaac, in her old neighborhood on the rougher side of town when she meets a mom at risk of losing her child to the foster care system.
Pat is an overworked Child Protective Services case officer.
Eleanor’s mother, also named Eleanor, passed away and she and Isaac celebrate her heaven anniversary.
There is a red bench in the yard where her mother would “hold court” in the neighborhood and be a place for neighbors to come and be heard.
Isaac gets messages from heaven and knows that if she opens herself up, she would too.
Reggie, a neighbor, stops by to help Eleanor.
Jewels, is the mom from the first scene who is at risk of losing her son. Drayvon is her son.
Jewels challenges Eleanor’s authority in the courtroom.
Heather is Eleanor’s best friend and she encourages her to get Isaac out of the bad side of town. Heather’s husband, Eddie, tries to convince Eleanor to leave the bench and return to his private practice.
Dad is trying to set Eleanor up with Reggie.
Jewels confronts Eleanor’s dad outside the house after being released and he falls and is taken to the hospital.
In a flashback, we discover that Jewels is the daughter of Eleanor’s childhood best friend, Natasha, who was killed in a drive-by.
