Its volatile oils and pungent phenolic compounds stimulate the flow of bile from the gallbladder and thereby aid in fat digestion.
This wonder herb is an effective carminative and is therefore very useful in treating flatulence, nausea, and abdominal bloating. Eating ginger, half an hour prior to a boat or car ride can effectively prevent motion sickness. It also provides relief from menstrual cramps, dyspepsia, or colic. It is also frequently used for treating diarrhea.
Drinking a cup of ginger tea helps to boost the immune system during the flu season. Its antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties have been employed for the prevention and treatment of a number of illnesses. A concoction prepared using ginger is known to break up the mucus, relieve throat congestion and chronic cough, and clear the sinuses. The anti-emetic effect of ginger has been found to be very useful for the management of morning sickness in pregnant women.
Further, ginger displays anti-inflammatory properties that are invaluable in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and various other musculoskeletal disorders. The chemical components of the root are instrumental in decreasing inflammation. Studies have proved that the regular consumption of ginger reduces pain and improves mobility in patients suffering from inflammatory disorders.
In addition, some research studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of ginger in lowering cholesterol levels. Preliminary studies have shown that the root prevents the formation of blood clots and helps relax the muscles around the blood vessels, thus affecting the heart positively.
